Overview
City Science supported LDA Design in their transport, carbon and infrastructure review for development in North Felixstowe to inform an Infrastructure Delivery Plan.
Felixstowe is the largest settlement in the former Suffolk Coastal Area with significant levels of growth planned in the Suffolk Coastal Local Plan (2020). The largest growth in housing is planned in the new North Felixstowe Garden Neighbourhood, which encompasses 143 hectares of land and is expected to deliver up to 2000 dwellings. A masterplan approach was required by policy to enable the delivery of modern leisure facilities, education provision, residential units and other facilities to meet the needs of the town and wider region.
Scope
LDA Design was tasked with pulling together a consortium to prepare a low-carbon infrastructure delivery plan for the Felixstowe development area.
City Science Response
We provided evidence and support to LDA Design and their wider consortium including:
- Mapping of mode share and car ownership, using our Cadence platform.
- Setting out the decarbonisation potential of interventions, based on our Royal Town Planning Institute research into the role of spatial planning and place-based solutions for net zero transport.
- Outlining the key causes of transport-related emissions (e.g. freight) and how to seek to address them, particularly in the context of a development so close to a port.
- Articulating and graphing the sources of emissions of car trips based on distance and journey destinations.
- Reviewing potential spatial design options in the context of decarbonising transport.
Outcomes
Our inputs helped inform the Felixstowe Infrastructure Delivery Plan
