Pathways to Net Zero: City Science’s Aviation Work

Aviation is one of the UK’s hardest sectors to decarbonise. Over the past decade, City Science has built deep expertise in tackling this challenge through systems thinking and integrated energy planning.

From Local Solutions to National Impact

Our aviation portfolio spans the full spectrum of decarbonisation challenges. We’ve explored the feasibility of producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel from municipal solid waste in the Heathrow Strategic Planning Group area, supported the Climate Change Committee in assessing Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage, and developed innovative local carbon offset markets for CORSIA compliance.

At East Midlands Airport, we’ve delivered comprehensive decarbonisation studies that position airports as leading transport and energy superhubs. Meanwhile, our work on Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’s Local Area Energy Plan has pioneered methods for estimating aviation fuel usage and modelling future energy demands across scenarios including SAF, hydrogen, and electric alternatives.

Systems Thinking in Action

What sets our aviation work apart is our integrated approach. We don’t just look at aircraft and runways; we look at how airports connect to regional energy networks, local infrastructure, and broader net zero strategies. By combining spatial analytics with deep technical modelling, we’ve helped airports, regional partnerships, and national bodies turn ambitious targets into actionable, measurable pathways.

Our projects demonstrate that solving aviation’s decarbonisation challenge requires collaboration across multiple stakeholders: airports, energy providers, local authorities, and national agencies working together towards shared goals.

Looking Ahead

As the UK works towards its Jet Zero Strategy, the aviation sector faces unprecedented transformation. Our decade of experience has equipped us with the tools, methods, and partnerships to support this transition—from SAF feasibility studies and airport energy master planning to carbon sequestration modelling and systems analysis for future fuels.

The path to net zero aviation is complex, but with data-driven insight, systems thinking, and collaborative action, it’s a journey we’re ready to navigate together.
