On 13th July, City Science were proud to host the first event of our three-part webinar series called ‘Navigating Transport Decarbonisation’. The series is focused on equipping transport practitioners and local authorities with the information and tools to press ahead with transport decarbonisation. The first hugely successful event, entitled ‘The urgency of change’, focused on examining current transport emissions and the speed, direction, and relative merits, of different decarbonisation pathways (recording available here).
Chaired by Elliot Reid (Principal Transport Consultant, City Science), these topics were explored in presentations and a panel discussion from:
- Glenn Woodcock (Founder and CEO, Global City Futures and Founder, City Science and Exeter City Futures)
- Becca Massey-Chase (Co-Deputy Head of Environmental Justice Commission, Institute for Public Policy Research)
- Jillian Anable (Professor of Transport and Energy, Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds)
- James Golding-Graham (Innovation & Decarbonisation Manager, England’s Economic Heartland)
- Bob Hickish (Senior Transport Planning Consultant, City Science)
The audience of over 150 were proactively engaged, with the presentations and discussions sparking an insightful discussion amongst the panellists. Specific themes covered include:
- Is decarbonisation in tension with living standards?
- The challenges associated with freight transport decarbonisation
- Can cars be decarbonised more quickly than current goals?
- What is an effective decarbonisation target?
We look forward to digging deeper into these issues during the next webinar in the series in September which will be focused on the relative role of technology in achieving transport decarbonisation. Please register for our next event here.
