City Science and partners Growth Guides awarded Innovate UK funding to build a tool that will help local authorities develop more robust, socially-inclusive Net Zero plans

We are thrilled to announce that City Science, in collaboration with Growth Guides, has been awarded funding from Innovate UK’s Design Foundations Round 2: Net Zero Environments competition. This funding will support our innovative project to develop a groundbreaking public consultation and engagement tool for local planning.

The project aims to reinvent the public consultation process, deeply embedding public needs into local planning to accelerate the transition to net zero places. By utilising humanity-centred design principles, we will co-create a digital tool that makes it easier for the public to provide input, better understand their needs, and translates complex information into relatable narratives.

“The focus groups will provide rich insights that will allow us to design a consultation tool that deeply embeds public perspectives into local planning processes,” said Jade Baker-Edwards, Principal Energy and Sustainability Consultant. “We’re optimistic the final tool will revolutionise how the public inputs into developing net zero places.”

Key features of the proposed tool include:

  • Interactive story maps and engaging feedback mechanisms to boost representation from the often-silent majority
  • Easy access to evidence bases to increase comprehension of environmental trade-offs.
  • Full integration of consultation, evidence, and plan outputs into one seamless platform

We are honoured to have received this funding from Innovate UK and excited to collaborate with Growth Guides on this project over the next 6 months. Together, we are committed to developing solutions that foster sustainable communities while giving the public a stronger voice in shaping their environment.
