City Science Wins Major Just Transition Strategy Contract with London Legacy Development Corporation

We’re thrilled to announce that City Science has been selected by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) to develop their groundbreaking Just Transition Strategy, a pivotal piece of work that will define how one of London’s most important regeneration areas delivers rapid decarbonisation and climate resilience through a fair and equitable approach that provides benefits to local communities.

A Strategy for Fair Climate Action

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its surrounding communities present a unique opportunity to show how climate action can drive inclusive growth, ensuring that the transition to Net Zero creates opportunities and enables local residents, businesses, and communities to thrive.

The LLDC recognises that previous economic transitions, from the closure of mines and docks to the decline of manufacturing, showed what happens when change is left entirely to market forces. Communities suffered. This time must be different.

Our Role in Shaping the Future

Over the coming months, City Science will work closely with LLDC, the Greater London Authority, neighbouring boroughs, and crucially, local communities to:

  • Define what ‘just transition’ means for East London’s diverse communities.
  • Identify practical actions that LLDC and its partners can take to ensure climate benefits are shared equitably.
  • Develop an action plan that turns ambitious climate goals into tangible opportunities for local people.
  • Creates a framework for measuring progress that keeps communities at the centre.

This work recognises that sustainability cannot be perceived as a “middle-class luxury”, it must deliver real benefits for everyone, especially those who have historically been excluded from economic opportunities.

Beyond Carbon: Building Resilient Communities

As extreme weather becomes more frequent, we need to ensure that all communities are prepared and protected, with particular attention to those most vulnerable to climate impacts.

Our approach will weave together housing, jobs and skills, community engagement, and economic development, recognising that effective climate action touches every aspect of how we live and work.
